WAVERLY PARK HOMESTEAD
ART GALLERY
ABOUT
The Waverley Park Homestead Art Gallery is a not-for-profit and, primarily, not-for-sale (non-commercial) volunteer-run art gallery and community cultural centre. A regular program of three-month temporary art exhibitions that feature locally and regionally created visual arts and, at most times, the Willunga National Trust art collection is on display. Art workshops are held throughout the year and provide tuition in a range of media and techniques. In addition there is a program of openings, talks, and folk music sessions and it provides local community groups with a venue for meetings, events and activities.
Waverley Park Homestead has partnered with the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in the “Sharing the National Collection” (SNC) program (over four years) to fund the costs of transporting, installing and insuring works in the national art collection so that they can be seen across the country for extended periods. We currently host four works from the National Collection including two works by Horace Trenerry, one by James Cant and one by Kathleen Sauerbier.
The heritage-listed Waverley Park Homestead (WPH) was originally bult for important local identity Thomas Smith Kell in the mid 1840s and later considerably extended. It is leased from the City of Onkaparinga and managed by the Willunga Branch of the National Trust of South Australia. The picturesque property, set between two tree-lined creeks, was a camping place for the local Indigenous people and later became a popular venue for picnics. Waverley Park Homestead is listed on the City of Onkaparinga’s local heritage list (State Heritage Places database #5460).
The Willunga Branch assumed management of the building in April 2023 becoming the first, and to date only, National Trust Art Gallery in South Australia. A team of more than twenty volunteers regularly open Waverley Park Homestead to the public on three days per week (Fri, Sat and Sun) making our art exhibitions and activities publicly accessible.
Admission is free.
